A boss I had was the poster boy for that scathing look you describe.
After a while, I started deliberately using every fifty-dollar word I knew in all my communications with him 😉

First one was “endemic.” I used it in a memo. He called me into his office and thrust the memo at me, clearly convinced it was a typo.
“What’s THIS?!” he snarled, gesturing at the word.
“Oh, endemic,” I said, cheerfully, “you know, part of a specific place.”
He turned PURPLE. Still don’t know how I kept my face neutral until I’d got back to my office!
